The Composer is an epic and emotionally resonant feature about Maestro Dino Zonic and his personal experiences during the war and siege of Sarajevo. This epic film explores the intersection of the brutality of war and the transcendent power of music.

Through a compelling love story, richly drawn characters, and a gripping narrative, the film highlights the importance of unity—both on the battlefield and within the human heart—and demonstrates how art can serve as a pathway to healing in a fractured world.

Synopsis:

​

A young composer—already among the youngest professors at the music conservatory in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia—looks back on a life shaped by creation, destruction, and survival.

What begins as the story of an artist’s struggle for meaning becomes the story of a man forced to confront violence, loss, and the collapse of the world around him. 

The story unfolds in Sarajevo—the “Jerusalem of Europe”—a city where cultures and faiths once lived intertwined. In the early 1990s, as the city came under brutal siege, its people stood against overwhelming aggression with little more than courage, unity, and an unbreakable love for their homeland. Muslims, Christians, and Jews defended their civilization side by side while the world watched in silence.

Amid the chaos stood the young Maestro, frontman of the military squadron Sparkle 6, one of the units within the Bosnian and Herzegovinian Army known as the “Lilies.” He fought not only for survival, but for the soul of a city determined not to surrender its humanity.

But war leaves no one untouched. 

 

After witnessing the great loss and destruction, young Maestro's purpose was transformed: to lay down the rifle, raise the conductor’s baton, and dedicate his life to defending the dignity of humanity through music.

After leaving Sarajevo under difficult circumstances, he carried with him more than memories. He carried grief, trauma, and the unbearable weight of what he had witnessed. Though far from the battlefield, the war continued within him. Emotionally shattered and spiritually wounded, he struggled to reclaim the artist he once was.

 

Then, through his sessions with Dr. Hecimovic in Croatia, something buried deep within began to awaken. Memory returned. Longing returned. And beneath the silence of despair, the music still lived.

And then—it came.

 

From silence and suffering emerged Musical Circle—a powerful artistic work that traveled across Europe for six years before reaching Broadway, New York.

Through music, he gave voice to those who had been silenced. Through art, he carried the truth of Sarajevo beyond its ruins and into the conscience of the world.

His message spread. His story endured.

 

Yet the question remained:

Can a man who has lived through war ever truly heal? 

At its heart, this is the story of survival through art—of a man who chose creation over destruction, and who transformed pain into a force capable of uniting humanity itself.
